Shogun is set in Japan in the 17th century, during the era of samurai warriors.
Although the story is fictionalized, it is largely based on a true story.
The main character is based on William Adams, who learned Japanese culture and developed the skills to become the first foreign samurai.
At the start of the series, English sailor John Blackthorne finds himself stranded in Japan during a period of war and during this time, Lord Yoshii Toranaga, once the most powerful man in Japan, disagrees over political rivalries and learns from Blackthorne that Spain and Portugal intend to become the next world superpowers.
As Toranaga uncovers hidden truths, he realizes that his leadership is being questioned and that there are traitors among his people.

A trailer for Shogun was recently released for viewers and the least we can say is that it is mouth-watering.
We can see Lord Yoshii Toranaga sitting on his throne tapping his fingers, with a montage interspersed with intense battle scenes and a shipwreck at sea. The series tells us from the outset that the characters will be constantly caught between maintaining the honor and the certain confrontation of death.
Who stars in the Shogun series?
Hiroyuki Sanada headlines Shogun as Lord Yoshii Toranaga.
The world-famous Japanese actor and martial artist is best known for his roles in films such as John Wick: Chapter 4, Bullet Train, Mortal Kombat and Army of the Dead.
Shōgun is not his first foray into television, having also starred in season 3 of The Last Ship, seasons 2 and 4 of Westworld, and season 6 of Lost.
The main cast of Shogun also includes Cosmo Jarvis in the role of John Blackthorne, who we could see in Raised by Wolves or Peaky Blinders.
We also find Anna Sawai in the role of Toda Mariko, who recently starred in the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
