You can find beautiful flowers in every botanical garden.

But some of the show gardens are so special for plant lovers that a longer journey is worth it.

The list of botanical gardens in Germany is long; almost every federal state can boast one or more lovingly maintained grounds with native and foreign plant species.

Listing the almost 100 gardens cannot do them enough justice; making a selection is always a bit unfair - each garden is unique in itself and brings joy to plant lovers.

A visit to a botanical garden in a city is always worth it, but some are even worth a trip for fans of biodiversity and botanical superlatives when everything is in bloom.

1. Botanical Garden of the Ruhr University Bochum

In the Bochum Botanical Garden you can not only find lots of flowers, but also a wooden path over a jungle pond with bald cypresses.

The Botanical Garden of the Ruhr University Bochum not only offers show houses such as the tropical, desert and savannah houses, but also a journey into the past of Central Europe 20 million years ago: you can take a picturesque walk across the tertiary pond on a wooden walkway past primeval bald cypresses and ferns over.

Then take a break in the pearl of the garden - the beautiful Chinese garden is a place of peace and meditation and one of the most authentic Chinese gardens outside of Asia.

2. Berlin Dahlem Botanical Garden

You can get past Berlin more quickly.

It is worth taking a detour lasting several hours to the botanical garden in the Dahlem district, which enjoys a high reputation worldwide with its over 22,000 plant species and, with an area of 43 hectares, is considered one of the largest in Germany.

But that's not the point.

In 15 greenhouses you go on an informative botanical trip around the world, before finally marveling at a 25 meter high giant bamboo in the tropical house, which grows around 30 centimeters every day.

The four-season trails guide visitors past the most beautiful flowers of each season.

Please note: Visits to the outdoor area are restricted until March 27, 2024.

3. Rhododendron Park in Bremen

For rhododendron lovers and people who appreciate Monet's paintings, there is no way around the Rhododendron Park in Bremen.

On 46 hectares you will find the largest collection of rhododendrons and azaleas in the world with 650 wild forms and 3,500 cultivated varieties.

The best time to visit is from May, when almost the entire park is in bloom.

Entry is free.

In the middle of the Rhododendron Park lies the Bremen Botanical Garden with a large number of native plant species and one of the most extensive medicinal plant departments in Germany.

4. Palmengarten Frankfurt

Next door is the big city, of which you can no longer feel anything in the palm garden of the Frankfurt Botanical Garden.

Here you will not only find the 18 meter high palm house, the showpiece of the palm garden opened in 1869, with an oversized winter garden, countless types of palm trees and a waterfall.

You can marvel at 13,000 tropical and subtropical plant species on the approximately 20 hectare garden area.

5. Mountain garden in Hanover Herrenhausen

The mountain garden, originally created as a vegetable garden in 1666, is one of Hanover's Herrenhausen Gardens.

It is one of the oldest botanical gardens in Germany and has one of the largest orchid collections in the world, with around 3,000 species and 1,000 varieties and hybrids.

The old Süntel beeches with their twisted branches, a botanical rarity in Lower Saxony, are particularly worth seeing.

6. Munich-Nymphenburg Botanical Garden

In the immediate vicinity of one of Munich's top attractions, Nymphenburg Palace, the Munich-Nymphenburg Botanical Garden invites you to view around 16,000 plant species.

In an area of over 4,500 square meters of greenhouses you can see plants from all climate zones from the Alps to the desert.

The special features include a popular tropical butterfly exhibition, an interactive “tree finder” with which you can search for trees in the open air and the BIOTOPIA Lab, a scientific experiment and exhibition room.
