The phenomenon of hazing "has long since ceased, fortunately, to concern our armed forces".
This is what we read in the report by military prosecutor Marco De Paolis on the occasion of the inauguration of the judicial year.
"This year too, no significant data have been reported in any of the Military Prosecutor's Offices. This phenomenon, very widespread in the 1980s and 1990s in Italian barracks, has now ceased to interest the armed forces", adds De Paolis.
Furthermore, "sexual harassment behavior - he added - which does not always end in an act that is perfected instantly, but which instead often persists over time by being repeated several times also ends up disturbing and altering relationships within a department and affecting the correct functioning of the services".
For this reason, for the magistrate, there is "the need not only to adequately sanction illicit conduct, but also to prevent it through effective training activities for military personnel, including corps commanders".
In the meantime, the Attorney General further informed, "the number of members of the Armed Forces registered in the register of crime reports has increased slightly. In 2022 there were 1749 and in 2023 the number went to 1830 registered soldiers. Compared to the five-year period, however, there has been a significant increase: from 1563 units in 2018, to 1830 in 2023, with a percentage increase of 17% compared to 2018".
