Not all flowering plants in the garden center are frost resistant.
But if you don't want to go without flowers in March, you will find a selection of robust flowers there.
Sometimes you can be fooled by the first warming rays of sunshine of the year in March.
During the day the temperatures climb into the double digits - how tempting to furnish the balcony or terrace with everything that is blooming now or soon.
But it often gets bitterly cold at night.
Strictly speaking, there is a risk of night frosts or even surprising late winter outbreaks until the Ice Saints in May.
But you don't have to be frightened by this, because there are enough flowers that don't freeze immediately when the temperatures are a little below zero and their flowers seem to defiantly insist on spring.
Ten spring flowers for the balcony that bloom in March
A rather unknown harbinger of spring: the pasque flower or pasque flower blooms from March to May.

Seeds are only for the patient.
If you want to see results quickly, go to the garden center or discount store for budding young plants or adult specimens that are already in bloom.
Not everything that blooms in stores can survive low temperatures on the balcony, as the plants were usually cultivated in a greenhouse and could react sensitively to fresh air.
The following specimens can be beautifully arranged in a pot or planted alone - and can be quickly brought back into the house when there is a threat of really severe frost:

Daffodils
Pansies
horned violets
Thousand Beautiful (Bellis)
Camellias
Crocuses

Winter-hardy varieties are more suitable
In any case, if you have a larger selection in the garden center, it makes sense to ask for varieties that are as frost-hardy as possible - for example, there are differences with primroses, grape hyacinths or bellis.
You should not plant dwarf irises, begonias, daisies or geraniums outside yet - they are quite sensitive to frost and only come out into the fresh air in May.

In March you can also plant frost-resistant summer bloomers on the balcony, which will then show their flowers from May or June when the spring flowers have faded.
These include the bellflowers such as the Dalmatian bellflower, the ranunculus or the goose cress.
