In no other city is a driver's license as expensive as in Munich. The basic fee, practice lessons, special trips, learning materials, the registration fees for the driving school and TÜV/Dekra exams: This adds up to a lot of costs. A driving license increases independence.

Anyone who strives for this needs one thing above all: money.

Because the prices are very high.

Munich – The path to getting a driving license is associated with high costs.

So high that some people are surprised.

A user on Reddit elicited many answers from other driving students with her question: “I just paid 3,600 euros, is that normal?”

“You got ripped off,” one commented, adding that the prices were completely exorbitant.

Based on the reports from other users, it quickly becomes clear: the price range is wide in Germany.

But how does the driving license price actually come about?

And why is there such a regional difference?

The ADAC and the Association of German Driving Instructors (IDFL) commented

Driving license expensive in Germany – “Each driving school can set its own prices”

3,600 euros for a driving license are steep, but not unusual - as a survey by the ADAC shows.

When asked by

IPPEN.MEDIA

in February 2024, the traffic club summarized: “Those who have had their driving license for six months or less usually paid 2,500 to 3,500 euros (46 percent).

A good fifth (22 percent) of these people even reported total costs between 3,500 and 4,500 euros.”

The ADAC further explained: “Driving schools are not subject to a fee schedule, which means each driving school can set its own prices.”

IPPEN.MEDIA

received a similar answer from IDFL.

This background may also explain why the costs vary so much.

Prices for learner drivers are particularly high in Bavaria's state capital.

In no other city is a driving license as expensive as in Munich.

Basic fee, practice lessons, special trips, learning materials, the registration fees for the driving school and TÜV/Dekra exams: This adds up to a lot of costs.

As the ADAC further writes, the practice hours are the largest cost item.

Depending on how much practice a learner driver needs, a driver's license can cost more or less money.

The monetary range for driving lessons is between 55 and 77 euros.

Association breaks down costs for driving schools

When asked why driving licenses are so expensive these days, the ADAC answers: “As ADAC, we have no insight into the pricing of driving schools, but in our opinion the increased costs can be explained, among other things, by higher fuel, personnel and vehicle acquisition costs .”

The IDFL explained: “As far as the regional price differences of the driving school are concerned, a driving school company must take constantly increasing cost items into account when calculating its prices.” The interest group cited several points here, including personnel, space, vehicle and advertising costs as well as, for example, debt collection fees or losses on receivables.

“Since not every driving school has the same costs for the individual positions, there can inevitably be significant cost differences in the pricing of the driving school,” the IDF continued.

Legal regulations would also increase costs.

The IDF considers the idea that driving licenses could become cheaper – as emerged from a Union concept – to be “complete nonsense”.

“Driving licenses are an absolute luxury good”: Current prices amaze Reddit users

Many people don't like the fact that the costs are so high these days.

“At current prices, a driving license is an absolute luxury item.

I can fully understand why many people don’t do it anymore,” wrote a Reddit user who paid 1,250 euros for the B-Class in 2013.

“The cost of having fun today is crazy,” commented another user, whose driving test was probably a while ago.

Meanwhile, the controversial EU reform also caused a stir on the subject of driving licenses.

A much-discussed aspect did not find a majority.
