The independence with a driving license is high - as are the costs.
If you want to get your driving license, you need one thing above all: financial resources.
Frankfurt – Obtaining a driving license in Germany is expensive.
So expensive that many people are surprised.
“I just paid 3600 euros, is that normal?” asked a user on Reddit.
A study by the ADAC provides the answer.
At the request of
IPPEN.MEDIA,
the traffic club summarized in February 2024: “Those who have had their driving license for six months or less usually paid 2,500 to 3,500 euros (46 percent).
A good fifth (22 percent) of these people even reported total costs between 3,500 and 4,500 euros.”
But why are driving license prices rising?
And why are there regional differences?
The Association of German Driving Instructors (IDFL) also took a position.
The costs for a driving license at a glance
As the ADAC explained, driving schools are not bound to any fee schedule.
IPPEN.MEDIA
received a similar answer
from the IDFL: The amount of fees for the training and other services offered by driving schools are determined by the holder of the driving school license freely, independently and under their own responsibility." This background should also explain why the costs are sometimes so different are.
Prices for learner drivers are particularly high in Bavaria's state capital.
In no other city is a driving license as expensive as in Munich.
In a driving school you learn to drive a car.
But that costs a lot of money.

Basic fee, practice lessons, special trips, learning materials, the registration fees for the driving school and TÜV/Dekra exams: This adds up to a lot of costs.
As the ADAC further writes, the practice hours are the largest cost item.
Depending on how much practice a learner driver needs, a driver's license can cost more or less money.
Every student needs a certain number of driving lessons.
Basic amount: 350 to 565 euros
Driving lessons (45 minutes): around 55 to 77 euros
Special trips: up to 95 euros
Learning material: around 88 to 119 euros
Registration for the theoretical exam: 60 to 137 euros
Registration for the practical exam: 169 to 269 euros
Theoretical test TÜV/DEKRA: around 23 euros
Practical test TÜV/DEKRA: around 117 euros
Development of the driving license price: “Constantly increasing cost items”
When asked why driving licenses are so expensive these days, the answer was: “As ADAC, we have no insight into the pricing of driving schools, but in our opinion the increased costs can be explained by, among other things, higher fuel, personnel and vehicle acquisition costs .”

Telekom change affects existing customers: the streaming change should start in February
“As far as the regional price differences of the driving school are concerned, a driving school company must take constantly increasing cost items into account when calculating its prices,” explained the IDFL and mentioned several aspects.
These include space, personnel, vehicle and advertising costs as well as collection fees or losses on receivables.
Since not every driving school has the same costs for every item, there could inevitably be significant differences.
The IDFL at IPPEN.MEDIA
rated the fact that driving licenses could become cheaper – as planned in a Union concept –
as “complete nonsense”.
Driving licenses are now an “absolute luxury good”
The fact that the costs are so high is not well received by many people.
One user described the driving license as “an absolute luxury item”.
He can understand why many people no longer get a driving license these days.
He got the license himself in 2013 and paid 1250 euros for the B-Class.
“The cost of having fun today is crazy,” another user shared this opinion.
Meanwhile, the EU reform also caused a stir on the subject of driving licenses.
It has been clear since the end of February: There will be no mandatory health check.
