Faithful to his direct and incisive style, Argentine President Javier Milei addressed the political leadership that only a month earlier had scuppered the omnibus law and the tax reform by stating that he was willing to give "a new opportunity".
In his first speech in front of the chambers gathered for the inauguration of the legislative year, the ultra-liberal leader then summoned those present, including the provincial governors, to sign a pact for the refoundation of the country to be celebrated symbolically on May 25th, in occasion of the Fatherland Day.
But on one condition, the prior approval of the two pillars of his political and economic program rejected by parliament: the omnibus law and the tax package.
Only with this step resolved does Milei say he is willing to discuss the new federal pact, a platform of ten points destined to transform into real state policies.
Among these, in addition to the first which states "the inviolability of private property", include the principle of fiscal balance;
the reduction of public spending;
tax, labor and forecasting reforms.
Before arriving at the propositional part, Milei had illustrated in detail "the legacy received: it is the most critical economic moment in the history of Argentina", he stated.
"The last 20 years have been an orgy of public spending, which has produced a deficit of 15% of GDP and brought the Central Bank's reserves into the red by 11 billion dollars", he added, underlining that at the time of assuming the presidency inflationary inertia had reached 17,000% per year.
Numbers which, says Milei, explain the fact that poverty has today reached almost 60% in the context of the rigid fiscal and macroeconomic recovery plan he initiated.
The president spoke in this sense of "difficult choices", but also of the fact that "for the first time the people chose the candidate who preferred to tell an uncomfortable truth than a comforting lie".
"We presented a program of efforts and sacrifices, because we don't turn the page on a century of decadence overnight. But at the same time we made a commitment to the Argentines that the effort would be worth it," he said. said Milei.
