In Brazil, dengue cases in pregnant women increased by 345.2% in the first six weeks of 2024, compared to the same period last year.
This was reported by the Ministry of Health, highlighting that 5,151 cases have already been recorded compared to 1,157 in 2023.
The highest number of dengue cases among pregnant women is recorded in the southern macro-region, where the increase is 1,088.7% , followed by the Southeast region, 392.2%, Central West, 346.3%, North, 142.9% and Northeast, 120.2%.
The ministry also reports that, due to the increased risk for pregnant women, differentiated treatments are necessary, since "in this disease both the maternal and perinatal prognosis are compromised".
Brazil is going through an emergency phase due to the dengue epidemic.
In the first months of 2024, Brazil exceeded one million infections.
As of March 1, there were 1,038,475 confirmed cases of the disease, an increase of almost 400% compared to the same period last year.
Furthermore, 258 were registered during the period compared to 205 in the same period last year.
In total, 1,658,816 cases and 1,079 deaths had been recorded in 2023.
