- She was the undisputed queen of the province of Arezzo, the district of the "white giant", the symbol of breeding, tradition and the beauty of the Tuscan countryside.
An SOS comes from the Arezzo Cia where the Chianina farms are concentrated due to the risk of witnessing a continuous and progressive haemorrhage of companies that cease production and with it also the protection of the territory.
"The producers of Chianina have to deal with a serious market crisis and with increasingly stringent and difficult to apply rules", explains president Serena Stefani in highlighting unequivocal data of crisis in the sector;
average drop of 20% in Chianina sales and simultaneous reduction in price from around €8.5/kg to €7.5/kg.
"Our stables remain full. The appreciation index of this breed is in decline. We struggle to sell the animals, despite the fact that the market price has progressively lowered until it is at the same level as other breeds", complains Marcello Polverini, breeder Valtiberino, head of a multifunctional family business.
The entrepreneur explains that "the breeding of the breed requires complex and expensive management, which today is no longer profitable. In recent years, then, we have witnessed a real collapse in requests.
Nowadays we eat less meat and the sales channels are are restricted. Without considering that the affirmation of new commercial realities has devalued the product. Consider that 20 percent of this meat is enough to make a hamburger a Chianina hamburger. The need to start a campaign to protect the overall product, together with an adequate information and communication program to promote an excellence to which many breeders have dedicated themselves for years with commitment and passion".
