A cashier-free payment system is intended to make shopping at Aldi “faster and better”.

But the initial customer reactions are not good about the concept.

Munich – Years ago, a large manufacturer advertised its chocolate bar with the following catchy slogan: Working like a machine?

A lazy supermarket cashier could be seen at work.

And although Aldi checkout employees are known for working quickly, cashiering at the grocer could in the future be entirely done by machines.

A corresponding test is currently running at Aldi Nord.

Shopping without a checkout: Aldi wants to make the payment process “faster and better”.

Recently, another discounter took over Aldi - at least in the non-food section.

This is not the only reason why processes are continually being put to the test and new concepts are being developed to optimize shopping.

After all, no one likes to sacrifice more of their free time than necessary for everyday tasks.

Long queues at the checkout can be a real headache, which is why Aldi is testing several concepts.

At Aldi Süd, more self-service checkouts have recently been installed and the belts have been equipped with new product separators so that several customers can be cashed out at the same time.

At Aldi Nord they try to do it without a cash register.

“The magic of discounting lies in its simplicity.

We therefore always use technologies where they specifically make us better and faster,” said Sinanudin Omerhodzic, Chief Technology Officer of Aldi in the press release about the checkout-free concept.

Thanks to the latest technology with artificial intelligence (AI), sensors on the shelves and “intelligent cameras”, the products are recorded and assigned to the respective customer.

Customers then have to “log in” using a QR code that is generated in the “ALDI Shop & Go App”. The purchases can then be stored directly in the bags or backpacks they have brought with them.

The purchase is completed contactlessly and cashier-free by scanning the code again when leaving the store.

“We cannot currently say what role these technologies will play in the entire Aldi Nord group in the future,” said the company about a possible introduction in German Aldi stores.

The decisive factor will be the customer rating.

On social media, data architect Philip Boontje expressed a scathing initial verdict.

He stood in front of the Aldi branch in Utrecht for five to ten minutes before he could enter - the app had caused him difficulties, he complained in an Instagram video.

However, consumer advocates criticized a new technology from colleagues at Aldi Süd that is supposed to be used in the aisles.
