Highlights: The New Guinea Highland Wild Dog was rediscovered in Papua New Guinea in 2017. The Afghan Hound is one of the oldest sighthound breeds and, as its name suggests, originally comes from Afghanistan. The Alaskan Malamute's origins go back an impressive 9,000 years. There are 370 dog breeds (including provisionally recognized breeds) recognized by the International Cynologie Fédération (IFC) as of February 2024. The Eurasier is considered the youngest officially recognized German dog breed.

The first dogs of this kind are said to have existed in Japan over 8,000 years ago.

The loyal four-legged friend became famous in the 2009 film “Hachiko – A Wonderful Friendship” with Richard Gere.

The strip tells the story of the Japanese Akita Inu Hachikō, who accompanied his owner to Shibuya Station in Tokyo every day in the 1920s and always picked him up again at the same time in the evening.
