With the issuing of passports now becoming difficult with waits that in some cases even exceed months, the new function of the Polis project begins which will also allow post offices to issue the now much desired document.

An experiment, conceived during the delicate emergency phase of Covid, which will involve almost 7,000 offices in as many small municipalities, i.e. those with less than 15 thousand inhabitants, but which cannot be ruled out in the future also being extended to large cities.

For the moment, therefore, 16 million citizens will be involved who, from today onwards, will be able to avoid long journeys and journeys to reach the police stations to fill out and collect their passports.

"We are suffering understandable and reasonable criticism - admits the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi - but we are making a great effort and in 2023 over 2,700,000 passports were issued, one million more than the consolidated trend of previous years. Not yet enough but today with the Polis project a virtuous process begins which will progressively affect a quarter of the Italian population".

The innovation, financed with 800 million from the Pnrr and 400 million from the Italian Post Office, will begin on an experimental basis in the province of Bologna, in San Pietro in Casale and Toscanella (fraction of Dozza), with a view to its progressive extension to the entire national territory.

Citizens, therefore, will be able to contact the post office directly with the documents necessary for issuing the passport which can also be received directly at home.

"We become a point of reference for the public administration - the words of the president of Poste, Silvia Maria Rovere - helping to reduce the gaps between centers and suburbs".

The president also underlined the "great contribution to the green transaction" thanks to the reduction of emissions in offices.

"Polis - she concluded - will be remembered as a fundamental piece of the country's progress, especially in the relationship between public administration and private companies".

"Today a new process begins", echoed Minister Piantedosi, underlining the objectives of "territorial cohesion", "simplification" and "digitalisation".

"It is a starting point, not a point of arrival - underlined the owner of the Interior Ministry -. A sign of attention towards the communities of those small inhabited centers that represent the backbone of our country".
