The work of the PSE Congress has begun at the Nuvola in the EUR in Rome, which sees the major European leaders taking turns to launch the electoral campaign for the European elections. The assembly was opened by the president of the PSE, Stefan Löfven.

Among the speeches was that of the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, and the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

Then the leader of the S&D group in the European Parliament, Iratxe Garcia Perez, and the Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu will speak.

The adoption of the PSE manifesto and the election of the socialist candidate in the next European elections Nicolas Schmit and his speech are scheduled for around 1pm.

Finally, Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will speak.

The conclusions will be entrusted to the leader of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein.

"The

best response to the far right

is what we have done and accomplished, it is our vision and our positive project for Europe, so that every citizen and every child has a better life. The far right proposes nothing : only hatred and destruction of Europe".

This was stated by the socialist candidate for the next European elections and current European Commissioner for Labour, Nicolas Schmit, while conversing with journalists on the sidelines of the PSE congress, which is taking place at the Nuvola all'Eur in Rome

.

"

This is not a project that helps people.

Nationalisms are never the solution, they have always led to wars and conflicts as we see with Russian aggression in Ukraine," Schmit added.

On Bulgaria and Romania I have always supported the idea that they fully enter the Schengen agreements.

Bulgaria must be accepted into the EU as an important country for our security and an active member in our union, and this must be recognized", said the Luxembourg politician.

"We will continue to build a better Europe, where work is safe and well paid, where men and women are equal: a beacon of democracy and civilization. We offer hope where others offer fear."

assured the Spanish Prime Minister,

Pedro Sánchez

in his speech underlining that "The welfare state and solidarity among citizens have allowed us to overcome such serious problems as the pandemic. But

all our progress is in danger, the soul of Europe is in danger

. It is up to us to defeat our enemies."

Getting to the heart of the problems is the EU Commissioner for the Economy and former Prime Minister

Paolo Gentiloni

.

"Taxation has a role to finance our objectives and for a more equitable order: it is important to rebalance the burden of taxes between capital and labour. Europe needs to reduce inequalities, a law that allows us to do this" .

said Gentiloni, adding that "Smith is the best person to move forward. We cannot ignore the challenges facing citizens, inflation has fallen, but prices today are 10% higher than two years ago and wages have not If we could follow this trend, our recovery plan created jobs, but did not increase wages."

And again: "Taxation - explained Gentiloni - has a role in financing our objectives and for a more equitable order: it is important to rebalance the burden of taxes between capital and labour. Europe needs to reduce inequalities, a law that allows us to do this."

"How can we guarantee that no one will be left behind? the EU Commissioner asked. We have more balanced rules, but steps forward are needed, in my opinion it is very clear: common financing of what are European common goods is part of the solution to these problems This form of just debt can be the beginning of a new pact for intergenerational solidarity at a European level."

“The two black swans of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine have shaken economies, but the response has been unprecedented, marked not by austerity but by fairness and solidarity. I am proud of the Sure tool that paved the way for Next generation Eu".

The entire congress of the European Socialist Party (PES) applauded the Portuguese prime minister,

Antonio Costa

, for a long time, who was greeted from the stage of the congress by the president of the PSE,

Stefan Löfven.

Costa, sitting next to the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, stood up to greet and thank the audience.

Tribute to Giorgio Napolitano, Gacques Delors and Martti Ahtisaari at the PSE congress underway in Rome, with a minute of silence and a video that remembered "three European socialist leaders".

The video was introduced by PSE general secretary Giacomo Filibeck, who presides over the Congress, who greeted Napolitano's son, Giulio, present in the room.

"We stand on the shoulders of giants", Filibeck then commented, also recalling that "one hundred years have passed since the assassination of Giacomo Matteotti by the Mussolini regime".

Applause for David Sassoli at the PSE congress

Applause from the audience greeted the passage in which, at the PSE congress underway in Rome, the PD's foreign affairs manager, Peppe Provenzano, quoted David Sassoli.

"The pandemic has shown us that society exists - said Provenzano - we did it with the 'next generation Eu'.

We must discover the same ambition and courage of our never forgotten David Sassoli".

At the end of the applause, Provenzano continued: "We must clearly tell our people that the Europe we want is not the Europe of today, but the social, democratic, sustainable Europe".

Difference women protest at PSE congress

Today during the work of the Congress of the European Socialist Party, scheduled in Rome, a delegation from Differenza Donna "strongly protested against the support given by the socialist party to the European Directive on gender violence approved last 8 February and which canceled points crucial in combating violence".

President Ercoli recalled that there are "over one hundred anti-violence centers and associations that are protesting and that on Change.org we are about to reach 100 thousand signatures for the petition launched against the approval of the Directive.

Differenza Donna has announced a mobilization on 8 March in Brussels with buses organized by Italy".
