Yesterday (Monday) in the evening, Shai Kabasa, a marine inspector at the Nature and Parks Authority, received a surprising call from a fisherman who spotted a turtle in distress and needed help to rescue it.

The fisherman, Mo'ad Shelbi, himself an inspector at the Kishon River Drainage Authority, went out last night with his friends to fish in the sea in front of Haifa.

While they were sailing, Shelby noticed a turtle floating on the surface of the water and unable to dive back - even when the boat approached it.

This is not the first time Shelby has noticed a turtle in distress.

Two years ago he encountered a similar case, so he immediately knew what to do.

With the help of his friends, Shelby brought the giant turtle into his boat and immediately called Shai - whom he knew from working together as inspectors.

"Muad's vigilance really saved the turtle," says Shay Kabasa.

"They did exactly what should be done when you encounter a turtle in distress - to look after it and call the professionals to treat it. When we arrived, they helped us transfer the turtle from their boat to us, and from there we took it for further treatment. The partnership between the fishermen and the inspection bodies is very important, this is how we manage to protect the sea , both for the animals and for us."

After the complicated rescue in the middle of the sea, the marine inspection team transferred the turtle to the sea turtle rescue center on a trawler, where he was hospitalized in intensive care, and was identified as a brown turtle weighing about 50 kilos.

Dr. Yaniv Levy, ecologist and director of the Sea Turtle Rescue Center at the Nature and Parks Authority: "The turtle is currently hospitalized, its condition is not alarming.

According to the blood samples, we assume that he suffers from the page injury, but we will have to do a CT scan in the next few days to confirm the diagnosis.

This morning the turtle has already started eating, it is important to remember that a turtle is a strong animal that has existed here for 130 million years.

His immune system is incredibly sophisticated and efficient.

In fact, our great help at the Sea Turtle Rescue Center is mainly to give the turtles the ideal conditions, a place to rest at the right water temperature, medication and regular food, so that their immune system does its job in the best possible way."

The brown sea turtle is one of the two species of sea turtles that nest on Israel's Mediterranean coast.

Its limbs are adapted for swimming as fins, its head is large and its upper armor is brown to reddish-brown in color.

At maturity, its shell is about a meter long and weighs about 100 kg. The sea turtles swim long distances between the feeding areas and the breeding areas. The brown sea turtles feed on marine invertebrates such as strands of skin, sponges and molluscs. Their feeding areas are in the marine areas near the coast, above the continental shelf Even though sea turtles are currently protected by law and it seems that the size of brown sea turtle populations in the Mediterranean Sea is on the rise, by-catch fishing, waste and pollution in the sea, vessel traffic and damage to the spawning sites still threaten this species. The National Center for the Rescue of Sea Turtles of the Nature Authority And the zoo treats injured and injured sea turtles and conducts research for their conservation.
