Double back and forth between the secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein and the Minister for Family, Birth and Equal Opportunities Eugenia Roccella.

The crux of contention is the decision of the Court of Padua which declared inadmissible the over 30 appeals with which the Prosecutor's Office had asked to cancel the double surname on the birth certificates of the child registered in the registry with the surname of the biological mother and of the so-called intended mother.

The secretary of the Democratic Party defined it as "good news" and asked: "Does Meloni continue to build a wall or does he let us be in line with the EU?"

and then added: "They cannot continue to ignore and trample on the dignity and rights of hundreds of girls and boys by turning a blind eye to the plurality of family models that are present in our country."

The minister replied: "In Italy children are all equal and have all the same rights: this was recently recognized by the European Court of Human Rights and, even before that, by the United Sections Court of Cassation" underlining that "the Meloni Government does not has changed a comma of our system" and again: "There are simple and accessible procedures that apply to both heterosexual and homosexual couples".

Elly Schlein's rejoinder was not long in coming: "Minister Roccella respects the difficulties that homo-parental families are forced to face in this country. There are no simple and accessible procedures: these families must turn to a judge and face a long, expensive, tiring and invasive".

Minister Roccella also counterattacked: "We point out to the Honorable Schlein that the procedure indicated by the Court of Cassation for homosexual couples, that is, adoption in particular cases, is the same one that has been used by heterosexual couples for decades" and underlined that "hundreds of single mothers have resorted to this procedure, provided for the protection and guarantee of children, and it does not appear that it has ever been contested in the long years in which the Democratic Party has been in government"
