The president of the National Electoral Council (Cne), Elvis Amoroso announced today that the presidential elections in Venezuela will take place on July 28th.
In a meeting held last October in Barbados, delegations from the government of President Nicolás Maduro and the opposition united in the Democratic United Platform (PUD) reached an agreement to hold presidential elections in the second half of 2024.
More recently, the Venezuelan Parliament had organized consultations with various sectors of civil society and with representatives of the moderate opposition parties represented in the legislative assembly, preparing a dossier delivered to the CNE with the proposals for a transparent, pluralist and democratic electoral process.
In a statement issued today, the Cne indicated that the electoral registers for the population will be open from 18 March to 16 April, while from 21 to 25 March nominations can be filed and finally from 4 to 25 July the electoral campaign will take place.
At the moment there is only one official presidential candidate, and it is the opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who overwhelmingly won the opposition primaries with over 92% of the votes.
However, Machado is subject to a 15-year ban from holding public office which, if not revised, would prevent her from participating in elections.
As far as the governing United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) is concerned, there is no official candidate, but many believe that Maduro will try to obtain a third mandate.
