When you get into the car, you should pay attention to what you have with you.

A certain item can cost you dearly.

Berlin - Anyone who drives too fast risks a high fine, that's clear - in Austria you can even expect your vehicle to be confiscated from March.

The rules have also been tightened for drunk driving.

But what very few people are aware of is that if you have a knife in your car, you also face an enormous fine, the ADAC has now warned.

Anyone who has this item in their car will pay a fine of up to 10,000 euros

No matter whether you take them with you on a picnic or have them with you as practical helpers for just in case: Some household items can be viewed as weapons.

This also includes knives.

If these meet certain criteria, they may not be carried in the car, otherwise there is a risk of a severe fine, warns the General German Automobile Club e.

V. (ADAC).

Paragraph 42 of the Weapons Act (WaffG) applies here.

Knives with a blade that can be locked with one hand (one-hand knife) or fixed knives with a blade length of more than 12 cm may not be used in public.

The Munich-based automobile club points out that “the use of certain knives is prohibited under the Weapons Act”.

It goes on to say, “If you have no legitimate interest in carrying the banned knives, for example because you need them for work, you face a fine of up to 10,000 euros,” says ADAC lawyer Annika Danner.

ADAC warns: Anyone who accidentally has this in their car will pay a fine of 10,000 euros

According to Section 53 of the Weapons Act, violations can result in fines of up to 10,000 euros.

In particularly serious cases, there may even be prison sentences of up to five years.

The affected knife can also be retracted.

This even applies if the weapons are transported but are not packed in a locked container.

In Germany it is usually not enough to put the relevant items in the glove compartment as they are still within easy reach there.

Certain types of knives are prohibited in the car

The banned weapons include various knives, but also airsoft guns, Danner continued.

A normal pocket knife, on the other hand, is usually not included.

Simply transporting a knife in the car can be expensive.

According to the ADAC, these types of knives are prohibited in the car:

  • All one-hand knives

  • Knife with a fixed blade of more than 12 centimeters

  • Knives classified as weapons

Risk in the car: It's not just knives that are dangerous

In addition to knives, other items in the car can cause damage or become expensive if they are stolen or stored improperly.

Electronic devices such as laptops, cell phones, tablets or, above all, power banks should not be left in the car to prevent damage or even fire.

The TÜV warns that the latter in particular should not be stored in a closed vehicle or even on the dashboard in direct sunlight.
