If you have diabetes, elevated blood sugar levels over several years can lead to diabetic foot.
You can recognize it by typical signs.
According to the
Marien Hospital Witten,
around a million people in Germany suffer from a so-called diabetic foot.
This means that 25 percent of diabetics are affected by this condition.
This is one of the most serious long-term complications of diabetes: over 50 percent of all operations on diabetics are carried out because of problems in the foot area, and there are 28,000 amputations in the foot and lower leg area every year.
A diabetic foot shows itself through certain symptoms.

According to information from the AOK health magazine,
a diabetic foot is
usually a result of poorly controlled diabetes mellitus.
The cause is elevated blood sugar levels over several years, which in turn are caused by a disturbed sugar metabolism.
High sugar concentrations in the blood eventually lead to damage to the blood vessels and nerves of the feet.
Doctors also refer to the condition as diabetic foot syndrome, as the clinical picture can vary from person to person and can have different manifestations.
However, the following symptoms typically occur:
pale skin
Red stain
Bruises
bluish discolored areas
black spots (if tissue is already dead)
Pressure points
reduced perception of pain

Diabetic foot: Open wounds that heal poorly are characteristic
The increased occurrence of open, poorly healing wounds is characteristic of a diabetic foot.
These can sometimes become infected and, in the worst case, even attack bones and soft tissue.
If the cases are particularly serious, the only option is amputation of the affected limb.
What many people probably don't know is that diabetes can also lead to specific hand diseases.
In order to prevent type 2 diabetes, signs of its harbinger, prediabetes, should be taken seriously.
