Five lives saved thanks to the generosity of two donors and their families and a transplant marathon that lasted a total of around 60 hours.
This is what happened to the Child Jesus of Rome.
The first three transplants were carried out between February 28 and 29, with organs taken from a deceased pediatric donor, whose parents consented to the removal.
Part of the liver and two kidneys reached three patients hospitalized at Bambino Gesù. A 5-year-old girl, suffering from biliary cirrhosis secondary to biliary atresia, received the left part of the liver.
The kidneys went to an 18-year-old girl, suffering from nephronophthisis, and to another 17-year-old girl, suffering from polycystic kidney disease and obstructive hydronephrosis.
The transplant sequence began with the departure of the sampling team on February 28th at 4.30 am and ended on the 29th at 2.30 pm for a total of 34 hours.
The other two transplants were performed at the same time between March 1 and March 2, with a liver taken from an adult deceased donor.
A split liver procedure was performed with the liver divided into right and left lobes, which were transplanted simultaneously to two patients.
An eight-year-old girl, suffering from fulminant hepatitis, who had been on the waiting list for 2 days, benefited from it.
And a 14-year-old girl, suffering from Wilson's disease, on the waiting list for 50 days.
The transplant sequence began with the departure of the sampling team on March 1st at 6:00 am and ended on day 2 at 6:40 am, for a total of 25 hours.
