(by Francesco Gallo) Not only the announced retrospective and manifesto dedicated to the great Marlon Brando, the 42nd Torino FilmFestival (22-30 November) directed by Giulio Base and presented this morning in Rome at Villa Miani in the presence of Enzo Ghigo and Domenico De Gaetano, respectively president and director of the National Cinema Museum of Turin, will have - as the artistic director announced - a simpler editorial line, fewer films and an opening with a major international film.
"My appointment has filled me with joy - said Basestamani at Villa Miani - and I have no desire to betray the spirit of this event which will still be a cinephile and authorial event. As for what's new, we are thinking of an important opening at the Teatro Regio with a big international film that brings national and international stars to Turin".
Among the other new features announced: "As far as selection is concerned, we thought about simplicity of use and therefore getting out of the tsunami of titles that confuse everything by going from 180 to 120".
There are four competitive sections: a main competition with sixteen films without distinction between national and international;
a short film competition of 24 titles again without distinction between national and international and, finally, a new non-competitive section, Zibaldone, which will collect works of various kinds and which will have an audience prize.
Regarding the Marlon Brando retrospective, Giulio Base says: "It has always been a true obsession for me. I have read almost everything about him in all the languages I know. He remains the greatest actor unanimously recognized by everyone. And then, what about him: he was an environmentalist ante litteram in favor of all possible battles".
Among the novelties of this Base edition is that of having a very young team of selectors, six people (three women and three men), all under 31 years of age: "The Turin Festival has always been a festival for young people and it is right that whoever selects is equally young", underlined the new artistic director.
