The leader of the Republican senators Mitch McConnell also gave his endorsement to Donald Trump, with whom he had stormy relations after the attack on the Capitol.
“It is abundantly clear that former President Trump has earned the necessary support of Republican voters to be our nominee for president of the United States,” McConnell said in a statement after Nikki Haley withdrew from the race.
"It should come as no surprise that as a candidate he will have my support," he added.
