Negotiations to reach a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas appear to be at a standstill, with just a few days left until the unofficial deadline for the start of Ramadan: the Guardian writes today.
Two days of talks between Hamas and international mediators in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, have produced no significant progress - according to Palestinian officials - after Israel refused to send a delegation to the latest round of negotiations.
Benjamin "Netanyahu does not want to reach an agreement" and "the ball is now in the Americans' court" to push the Israeli prime minister to return to the table, the head of Hamas' political division in Gaza, Basem Naim, told the media.
According to an anonymous official quoted by the Egyptian broadcaster Al-Qahera News, close to the country's intelligence services, "negotiations are difficult but they continue".
