The German Society for Nutrition has presented new nutritional recommendations.

Vegan and vegetarian substitutes are not mentioned.

The German Nutrition Society (DGE) has presented new food-related nutritional recommendations that are not only healthy but also sustainable.

The credo: More fruit and vegetables, less meat.

“We recommend eating colorful and healthy foods while protecting the environment.

“We recommend a plant-based diet,” said Anne Carolin Schäfer, nutritionist in the DGE Science Department, at a press conference on Tuesday, March 5th.

More than three-quarters of the DGE's new nutrition group consists of plant-based foods and places greater emphasis on legumes such as peas, beans, lentils and nuts.

Almost a quarter of the circle shows animal foods - that's less than before.

The new recommendations include one less serving of milk and dairy products than before and a maximum of 300 grams of meat and sausage per week.

Vegan and vegetarian substitute products are not mentioned.

DGE comments on vegan substitute products

According to the BMEL nutrition report, almost half of all Germans (49 percent) have bought vegan or vegetarian alternatives to milk, cheese or yoghurt as well as alternative products to meat products (meat substitutes) once or more often.

What about the vegan and vegetarian substitute products,

, wants to know at the press conference.

“We lack basic information to make recommendations for these foods,” says DGE President Bernhard Watzl.

There is great momentum in the area of plant-based alternatives in terms of product composition, frequency of consumption and long-term health consequences.

Reliable databases are needed here.

“It is clear to us that plant-based alternatives are an important dimension.

As soon as data is available, we will use it to better take this food group into account,” he says.

Oatly cites “scientific evidence” for vegan substitutes

“There is already some scientific evidence that highlights, for example, fortified plant-based milk alternatives as an important product group that meets the nutritional preferences of those who cannot or do not want to consume cow's milk,” Luise Hansen, Sustainability & Health Manager at Oatly DACH, told

BuzzFeed News Germany .

Solutions are needed in the discussion about how plant-based alternative products can be integrated into people's everyday lives in a healthy and sustainable way.

“Pausing this debate, as was the case in today's DGE press conference, does not do justice to today's times,” says Hansen.

DGE food recommendations: ProVeg expressed concerns in June

Last year, the company Oatly expressed concerns in an interview with

BuzzFeed News Germany

that the new DGE food recommendations exclude vegetarian and vegan substitute products, which are becoming increasingly popular in Germany.

Instead of a balanced nutritional guideline in which animal foods are grouped with plant-based foods, for example in a “protein group” or “calcium group,” it is becoming apparent “that plant-based alternatives will not appear in the new guideline – a wasted opportunity,” said Anna- Lena Klapp, Nutrition & Health Specialist at ProVeg, in June 2023

“Almost half (45 percent) of all government dietary guidelines worldwide already mention plant-based alternatives to meat or animal milk,” she said at the time.

One of them comes from Canada.

Despite the strong meat lobby, the Canadian government has managed to develop healthy guidelines that include animal substitutes.

ProVeg would also have liked such nutritional recommendations (see below) from the DGE in June - a wish that did not come true.
