Antonio Membrilla has announced this morning that he is not going to take office as director of the Federico García Lorca Board of Trustees due to the “situation generated” in relation to his appointment.
Membrilla wrote a tweet in 2020 in which he referred to historical memory as “hysterical memez.”
The Granada Provincial Council has issued a statement announcing that it will continue the process to appoint another person in charge among the rest of the candidates who applied for the position.
Membrilla's resignation occurs a few hours after the resignation of Laura García Lorca, the poet's niece, was announced as a member of the institution, responsible for the management of the writer's House Museum in her hometown, Fuente Vaqueros (Granada). ) and the Center for Lorca Studies.
On Monday night, Laura García Lorca sent a letter to the president of the Granada Provincial Council, Francisco Rodríguez, in which she reported: “As a member of the Federico García Lorca Board of Trustees of the Granada Provincial Council, having read the statements of the new director published in the press, I consider myself obliged to present my resignation.”
The poet's niece, who was a member with voice but without vote on the Board of Trustees, did not want to make any further statements about her resignation.
Antonio Membrilla, member of the PP and spokesman for his party in the municipal group of Armilla (Granada, 25,008 inhabitants), deleted the tweet due to the commotion created after learning of his appointment to distance himself from those words, but it was not enough to quell the controversy. .

In his opinion, he cannot direct a center dedicated to such an important victim of Franco's repression if he does not believe in reparation for those who have been retaliated against and has that concept of historical memory.
On Monday, for example, the Andalusian Federation of Democratic Memory, the largest memorial federation in Andalusia, published an open letter requesting his resignation.
His spokesperson, Antonio Manuel Mateos, estimates that this election is simply one more “step” in the Andalusian Government's actions of turning “its back on the victims and memory policies.”
Only this disinterest, he insisted, "explains the appointment of this person, who has criticized for years everything related to historical memory and who clings to the position for the remuneration."

The PSOE has also requested the resignation of Membrilla, who has already been officially appointed, although no event has yet been held in this regard.
Juan Espadas, general secretary of the PSOE-A, has asked for his departure due to “his contempt for historical memory and culture.”
Membrilla has not yet wanted to make statements to the media and his communications team has referred this newspaper to that future appointment ceremony.
