Piracy in the world of books robs publishers of 705 million euros in sales per year: more than a quarter of the overall value of the market (28%, calculated net of school publishing and exports).

Estimated piracy incidents in a year are 108.4 million, almost 300 thousand every day, down 8% compared to 2021. This is what emerges from the third analysis of the Ipsos research institute for the Italian Publishers Association on piracy in the world of books, presented today in the Gli Editori meeting, the consultation agreement between Aie and the Italian Federation of Newspaper Editors, at the Ministry of Culture in Rome. The investigation, presented by the president of Ipsos Nando Pagnoncelli, also finds that people pirate printed and digital books and databases on 31 % of the population over 15 years of age, 78% of university students, 49% of professionals (accountants, doctors, lawyers, notaries, architects, surveyors, engineers, labor consultants).

The consequence is a loss of jobs for the publishing sector amounting to 4,900 units, which becomes 12,000 if the related industries are also counted.

In economic terms, the loss for the country system is 1.75 billion euros, with 298 million in lost revenue for the tax authorities.

The meeting - moderated by the director of ANSA Luigi Contu, attended by the presidents of Aie and Fieg, Innocenzo Cipolletta and Andrea Riffeser Monti, with the conclusions of the president of the Culture, Science and Education Commission of the Chamber, Federico Mollicone - also emerged lack of awareness in public opinion of the seriousness of piracy and the possible consequences.

The percentage of those who say they are aware of the illicitness/illegality of piracy is equal to 79% in 2023 (84% in 2019).

70% of the sample interviewed believe it is unlikely that they will be discovered and punished.

Speakers included Benedetta Alessia Liberatore, director of the Digital Services Directorate of Agcom, Gaetano Cutarelli, commander of the Special Goods and Services Unit of the Guardia di Finanza, Salvatore Sica, president of the Permanent Consultative Committee for Copyright, Mauro Tosca, AIE anti-piracy manager and the writer and psychotherapist Stefania Andreoli.
