Uncertainty caused by global conflicts has many people thinking about emergency supplies.

With our checklist and tips you are prepared for an emergency.

There are numerous occasions that require emergency supplies: power outages, floods, quarantines, riots, conflicts.

The ongoing reports about the war in Ukraine and the Middle East conflict and their effects unsettle many people and raise the question of whether they are privately prepared for emergencies such as power or gas outages, storms or other situations.

It is advisable for every citizen to have a ten-day supply of food and drinking water at home.

In times of crisis, you can stay at home and relieve the burden on supermarkets and emergency services.

In addition to the emergency backpack, which allows you to quickly leave the house in the event of flooding or a fire, this is an important part of disaster preparedness.

But what foods should you really keep in your pantry?

Which foods are particularly durable?

With a checklist and the right advice you will be well prepared.

When creating an emergency supply: Take tastes and special cases into account

A general emergency inventory checklist can only be used as a guide.

When creating an emergency supply, always take into account your family's personal preferences or any special dietary requirements such as allergies, intolerances and the like.

If you have a baby and small children in the family, you may need additional baby food or porridge bottles.

You also need to take into account the care of your pets, including their additional water needs.

Choosing the right food for emergency supplies

Emergency supplies should include foods that provide enough calories and nutrients to keep you healthy in an emergency.

2,200 kcal per person per day is a guideline you should stick to.

Ideally, you choose foods that are not too specific and that you know so that you can easily use them to prepare varied dishes.

It is better to avoid chilled or even frozen products, as the power supply is likely to be interrupted in an exceptional situation and the cooling will no longer work.

If you still want to use chilled products, use them first.

So when you go shopping, you should make the right selection.

But what do you actually put in your shopping cart?

When it comes to this question, it is advisable to follow the general guidelines of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance.

In addition to food, you should have these medications and hygiene items at home in case of a disaster.

Create emergency supplies without hoarding: This is how much food and drinking water you really need

When you stock up, you should not buy pointlessly or in too large quantities.

The infamous hoarding caused unnecessary bottlenecks at the beginning of the corona pandemic and made it more difficult to provide supplies for everyone.

So when shopping, stick roughly to the following list.

Store and use emergency supplies correctly: Make sure you have a “living” supply

When purchasing your emergency supplies, be sure to note the best-before date and use the products accordingly to create a “living” supply.

It's best to sort the food directly on the shelf according to the use-by date and sort newly purchased products to the back.

Store the food in a dark, dry and cool place.

Pack as much as possible airtight.

So that you can cook meals from your emergency supplies even in the event of a long power outage, you should also stock a gas stove and the appropriate gas bottles.

By being prepared this way, you can stay well cared for at home for a longer period of time.
