Something is slowly starting to stir outside in the garden.

The desire to spend more time outdoors is constantly growing.

Some favorite places for reading in nature are now inviting again for one or two readings.

Shortly before the Leipzig Book Fair, there are a few novels whose publication was eagerly awaited.

We would like to introduce you to four of them here.

Marion Lagoda “A Garden Above the Elbe”

In 1913, Hedda took on the role of head gardener for the Jewish banking family Clarenburg in Hamburg.

As the first woman in this position, she encounters skepticism from her all-male colleagues.

Nevertheless, Hedda manages to realize her dream of gardening, including the construction of a Roman amphitheater, which becomes the center of magnificent festivals and theatrical performances.

But in the 1930s, both Hedda, who has Jewish ancestors, and the Clarenburg family came under increasing pressure.

In the novel “A Garden Above the Elbe,” Marion Lagoda tells the true story of Else Hoffa, who created the Warburg family's famous garden in Hamburg.

A novel not just for garden lovers.

Hamburg, 1913: When Hedda takes up her position as head gardener for the Jewish banking family Clarenburg, things aren't easy for her.

She is the first woman to hold this position on the park-like property above the Elbe and is viewed critically by her all-male colleagues.

A lot is also demanded of her physically, because the property above the Elbe is huge, and the First World War particularly challenges her gardening skills.

Doris Dörrie “The Rice Goddess and other souvenirs”

Doris Dörrie always succumbs to the temptation to bring back a souvenir from her travels.

Whether it's an origami snail from distant Japan, a wrestling mask from colorful Mexico, a figure representing a rice goddess from Bali, boxing boots from vibrant New York or Borotalco, an Italian miracle cure for stains - she brings a mix of useful things Objects, exotic foods, magical utensils and kitschy dust collectors.

She writes short texts about these small objects that say a lot about their place of origin and about the author herself, who falls in love with them and takes them home with her in her hand luggage.

Doris Dörrie's column in Die

Zeit

entitled “From my hand luggage” is now being published in book form for the first time, supplemented by three previously unpublished texts.

Short texts about small things that tell a lot about the place they come from and about the writer who fell in love with them and took them home with her in her hand luggage.
