In March it's time again: get to the secateurs!

Because if you want to enjoy strong plants in summer, you have to give them the necessary pruning now.

Pruning in spring ensures beautiful growth and strong flowers in summer for trees and grasses.

However, the right time for pruning varies depending on the plant.

Which species will be next in March – and what you need to pay attention to when pruning.

  • Roses:

When the forsythias are blooming, it is said that it is also time to prune the roses.

First, remove all damaged, dead and diseased shoots to prevent plant diseases.

Further pruning depends on the respective rose class.

The shoots of shrub roses are shortened by a third (for strong shoots) to half (for weak specimens).

“For bed roses and noble roses, leave four to five strong shoots from the previous year and shorten them to 20 to 40 centimeters - the rest are removed directly at the base,” informs the

    My Beautiful Garden portal.

Always place the secateurs five millimeters above an eye or a side shoot.

Once roses have bloomed, they are only thinned out a little if necessary.

  • Ornamental grasses:

The ideal time to cut ornamental grasses is from mid-February to the beginning of March at the latest.

This way the new shoots can grow better.

For pampas grass, however, you can give yourself until May.

The grass is simply picked up in bunches and the stalks and leaves are cut off about 10 to 15 centimeters above the ground with secateurs.

Dead leaves are also removed straight away.

However, be careful not to bend or damage the new stalks.

  • Wisteria:

    The wisteria

    (Wisteria)

produces its colorful flower clusters from spring onwards.

However, to ensure that flower growth does not decrease over time, the climbing plant needs to be pruned twice a year.

In spring, the short shoots are trimmed: “Out of four buds, only leave two,” advises

    Ökotest.de

    .

“But this brutal cutting is worth it, because the two remaining buds develop into more beautiful and longer flower spikes.” The cut is made at an angle, with the cutting edge pointing away from the bud so that rainwater does not run onto the growing bud and cause fungal diseases.

Weak and dried branches are also removed at this time.

The second cut of the wisteria takes place in mid-July to early August.

In addition, other trees are cut back in March, such as the fig tree and blueberries.

While you're at it, give your fruit trees a pruning too.

March is the last opportunity for this, as they are usually cut in the winter months.

However, you should stay away from drastic hedge trimming from March onwards - anyone who trims too much will face fines of up to 100,000 euros.
