No, tier groups will not be abandoned.
This is the message that Nicole Belloubet, the Minister of National Education, hammered this Thursday morning to the teacher unions she received on rue de Grenelle (Paris VII).
Level groups, or rather “need groups” if we stick to the new ministerial terminology, will be put in place at the next school year in 6th and 5th grade classes.
In French and mathematics, the students will be divided into three groups according to their abilities with a gauge of around fifteen students for the middle school students with the most difficulty.
This measure is part of the “shock of knowledge” plan announced by Gabriel Attal on December 5, when he was still Minister of Education.
But this project encounters broad opposition among teachers and school leaders, who denounce the sorting of students and the stigmatization of those with vulnerabilities.
