"They weren't lucky enough to have tried it'. This is Paul McCartney's peremptory response to those who accuse him of writing songs that are sometimes too corny or too honeyed. The former Beatle dedicated an entire episode of his podcast, ' A Life in Lyrics', to the theme.
"I was accused - he said - of writing silly love songs and I was on the verge of convincing myself that I needed to be tougher, more earthly.
But I also realized that that's exactly what love is, it's earthly." He explained that he sometimes marvels at critics who curse his legacy of love songs but also claims that criticism comes and goes as the power of music prevails over the 'gentlemen'. He underlines that love is such a universal feeling that it continually pushes him to write songs on the subject. He himself lived a wonderful love story with his wife Linda McCartney, who sadly died in 1998 due to cancer diagnosed in 1995.
He ended his episode by saying that he will never feel embarrassed about his love songs, it's a far from sappy topic.
