Anyone who cannot easily pay rent because of a low income is entitled to housing benefit.
The amount is paid out every month.
Due to rising energy costs, the federal government implemented a housing benefit reform: Since January 1, 2023, up to two million households with 4.5 million people have been able to receive housing benefit.
Tenants and homeowners with low incomes are entitled to the subsidy.
According to the federal government, around half of those receiving housing benefit are pensioners and around 40 percent are families, including single parents.

Like citizen's benefit, housing benefit is paid in advance so that recipients can use the subsidy to pay rent on the first day of the month.

How much housing benefit will there be in 2024?
The reform also adjusted the amount of housing benefit: an average of 190 euros more per month.
This means that around 370 euros in housing benefit per month is possible.
However, the exact amount is determined individually and can vary depending on how many people live in the household and what the income and rent are.
You can apply for housing benefit at the housing benefit office in the relevant city or municipality.
The Housing Benefit Plus calculator from the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Construction (BMWSB) can be used to determine whether you are entitled to housing benefit.

By the way: Anyone who already receives citizen's benefit cannot benefit from housing benefit at the same time, as the costs of rent are already taken into account.
This also applies to people who receive basic security in old age or who receive social assistance in the event of reduced earning capacity.
