In spring the temperatures are often changeable.

By properly ventilating and heating your home, you can save on energy costs.

During the day in spring you can enjoy the first warm rays of sunshine - but at night it is often even cooler.

What should you pay attention to when ventilating and heating your home when temperatures change?

“This interim period in particular, with fluctuating outside temperatures, offers great savings potential for consumers,” says Markus Lau, technology expert at the German Liquid Gas Association (DVFG).

The experts explain in a message how it works.

1. Ventilate longer in spring - the last time in the afternoon

According to the DVFG, when temperatures change in spring, you should ideally “ventilate three to four times a day for 10 to 15 minutes each” – instead of “three times five minutes” as is the case with ventilation in winter.

According to the experts, longer ventilation is worthwhile because warm spring air contains more moisture.

This means it absorbs additional moisture from the bathroom and kitchen less quickly.

Efficient ventilation therefore requires more time.

Ideally, you should ventilate the room for the last time in the afternoon during the transition period.

“Then the outside temperatures are still comparatively high and less room heat is lost,” says Markus Lau.

“For rapid air exchange, shock and cross ventilation are better than tilting the windows.” The heating valves should also be closed during ventilation.

2. Heat constantly - but at a low level

Constant heating is “the most reliable guarantee for more heating efficiency at yo-yo temperatures,” emphasizes the DVFG.

The tip is therefore that it is best to leave the heating on low, even when the afternoon temperatures are mild.

This is particularly true in poorly insulated existing buildings.

Turning the radiator thermostats up and down too frequently can use unnecessary energy and therefore heating costs.

And: If it gets frosty again in the evening, you can reach a comfortable temperature much more quickly.

“It is advisable not to depend too much on the fluctuating outside temperatures when heating,” says Markus Lau.

“Consistency is the much more efficient way to heat cost-effectively until the end of the heating season.”

3. Keep the heater clean and vented in spring

The experts usually see savings potential directly on the radiator.

If the heating is gurgling or if it doesn't get really warm despite the thermostat being turned up, there could be air in the system.

According to the DVFG, this occurs more frequently, particularly in existing buildings with older heating systems.

It is therefore worth bleeding the radiators again in spring.

“With too much air in the system, the radiators work inefficiently and use too much heating energy to reach the desired temperature,” says Markus Lau.

According to the experts, how often ventilation is necessary depends on the respective heating system.

The following usually applies: the older the radiators are, the more regularly they should be vented.

Dirty or dusty radiators also remain within your options, the statement also says.

Therefore, early spring cleaning is worthwhile here.

“Dust and dirt slow down heat transfer,” says Markus Lau.

“Radiators with clean external surfaces and internal gaps work more efficiently again – and save money.”

For spring cleaning, a few simple cleaning products are usually enough to get all areas of the apartment clean.
