Adam Sandler is the highest paid star in Hollywood, but Margot Robbie, the Barbie star who follows in his footsteps in second place in the new Forbes ranking of movie Scrooges, is by far the youngest star.
The 33-year-old actress, who is also among the producers of the summer hit on the Mattel doll, earned 59 million dollars last year, compared to Sandler's 73 million, accumulated thanks to a 44-year 'comedy tour' stages and to the Netflix rom-com Murder Mystery 2, the fifth film by number of downloads on the streaming platform with 173 million hours in front of the screen.
The ranking of stars sees the stainless Tom Cruise in third place (45 million) followed equally by Ryan Gosling and Matt Damon at 43. Jennifer Aniston (Sandler's costar in the second Murder Mystery) is sixth with 42 million, while Leonardo DiCaprio of Killers of the Flower Moon and Jason Statham shared seventh place with 41 million.
The top ten is completed by Ben Affleck (38 million) and Denzel Washington (24), the oldest on the list at 69.
The hit parade of the Scrooges of the screen leads to reflections: the earnings gap between Sandler and Robbie (14 million dollars) gives a glimpse of the financial power of Netflix where the comedian, in addition to the second Murder Mystery, has placed three other films in 2023 including Spaceman with Carey Mulligan which debuted this year in Berlin but for which the actor was already paid last year.
The list also seems to confirm that Hollywood remains a man's world: despite Barbie's global success, eight of the ten actors in the top ten are men.
