Gender stereotypes also exist in cover letters for job candidates with women being presented primarily as diligent and hardworking rather than brilliant.
We read this in a study by Bank of Italy "Women in the economic profession: the role of gender language in reference letters at the beginning of their career".
"Our results, we read, reveal significant gender differences in the way in which candidates are presented on the job market. The differences also concern the way in which they are characterized in letters of reference from senior academics. In particular, female candidates are consistently described as more diligent and hardworking than exceptional or brilliant."
This reduces success early in your career.
It is men who make this difference while women make no difference when writing cover letters based on gender.
"Gender stereotypes, we read, are particularly present among male consultants."
