According to a recent study, home office and work-life balance are becoming less important among employees.

A safe job is more important to most people.

More than a third of German employees are currently worried about their jobs: 38 percent fear for the security of their job.

Last year it was 25 percent.

This was the result of the evaluation of the

Randstad Labor Barometer

, a study that has been published regularly since 2003 and surveys employees in Europe, North and South America and the Asia-Pacific region.

At least 800 workers aged 18 to 65 took part in each country.

For almost all respondents (91 percent), job security is a top priority.

Security and salary are most important to employees

At 93 percent, only salary is even more important.

“This result is hardly surprising given the economic situation,” explains Hans Christian Bauer, Group Director Legal & Social Affairs at Randstad Germany.

Employees are more insecure than last year and are primarily striving for more certainty and a stable income.

Accordingly, the willingness to quit has declined rapidly.

18 percent are currently willing to leave their job if they feel like they don't belong there.

A year ago it was just under half of all employees at 49 percent.

According to the Randstad labor barometer,

after adequate pay and a secure job,

the following points are on the priority list of German employees:

  • Vacation (85 percent)

  • Work-life balance (85 percent)

  • Working time flexibility (75 percent)

  • Values and purpose (59 percent)

For young employees, the order looks slightly different, as the

Young Professional Attraction Index 2023

showed.

Of 12,107 young professionals (young employees with a maximum of five years of professional experience), 71 percent attach the most importance to salary and benefits when choosing an employer.

Similar to the

Randstad work barometer,

this result can also be attributed to the increased uncertainty in the world and the resulting desired financial stability, explained Mattias Stenberg, Managing Director at Academic Work Germany, to

WirtschaftsWoche

in October 2023

.

In second place is work-life balance at 59 percent.

The importance of home office is decreasing

However, the general trend across age groups attaches less importance to this.

In the current work barometer, 53 percent of employees stated that a balanced relationship between work and private life was crucial when choosing a job.

Last year this was still the deciding factor for 61 percent.

The home office also seems to be becoming less important.

Last year, 40 percent of employers would not have accepted a position if it did not offer sufficient flexibility in terms of work location.

It is now 34 percent.

A clear trend can be seen, says Hans Christian Bauer from Randstad Germany.

The need for security is increasing, while the importance of values and flexibility is decreasing.

At the moment, for example, 28 percent would not take up a job if the employer did not make any efforts to increase equity and diversity.

In 2023, however, this factor was an exclusion criterion for 41 percent.

Last year, 37 percent attached importance to sustainability; in the current survey it is 27 percent.

The desire for security benefits companies in some ways, for example by allowing them to require more attendance.

30 percent of those surveyed said that their superiors are already demanding more presence in the workplace.

But the reality is also that there is a shortage of skilled workers.

A lack of employees is a problem, particularly in the sectors of business and administration, engineering and technology as well as computers and IT, as another Randstad study, the

HR manager survey

, makes clear.

“Companies should not only demand, but also encourage them right now and accommodate their employees with attractive offers,” says Christian Bauer.
