A Netto branch asks its customers to present their backpack at the checkout.

On social media, users are discussing whether the claim is admissible.

Munich – Over the years, retailers have discovered various ways to combat shoplifting.

While some install several cameras, others arrange a security service to watch the customers for them.

A Netto branch has found another solution: They require customers to hand in their backpacks at the checkout before shopping.

The notice is currently causing a stir on Reddit.

Hand over your backpack before shopping: “just say no”

A user published his find under the subreddit “aberBitteLaminiert,” which is known for funny letters and written interactions in everyday life.

Although the notice shown in the photo is not laminated, it made it into the channel.

The author of the post writes about this: “Netto is trying to dribble out the law.” In the comments, over 350 Redditors argue about whether the demand is legal.

It is often read that this could just be a request or a suggestion.

A Reddit user recommends as a “life hack” simply saying no in some situations.

Another writes: "You can always be asked to do so, but you can then politely decline." Other Redditors are of the opinion that the case falls under Netto's house rules, which is why the request is okay.

“There is no dribbling of the law.”

Demand to hand in the backpack allowed?

This is what the consumer advice center says

In fact, business owners are allowed to require customers to hand over their backpack or bag upon entering the store.

According to the consumer advice center, this is only permitted if they can be guarded or stored in a locker.

However, small handbags containing personal valuables do not have to be handed in.

The Netto branch is right on this point.

However, the subsequent request to open backpacks or bags at the checkout is not permitted.

“Looking into your bag without there being a concrete suspicion of theft is an inadmissible interference with personal rights,” says the consumer advice center.

Accordingly, this requirement does not have to be complied with, “even if a sign in the store refers to the implementation of bag checks.”

Either way, some Reddit users don't want to comply with any of these demands.

One person writes: “I wouldn’t hesitate to accept it.” A Redditor says that it’s “absolutely undignified.”

“I have never stolen from a store in my life,” writes another and explains: “If I were to read that, this store would be my no-go!” Others, on the other hand, know how to avoid what is required: “It says nothing about wooden chests.”
