There is a shortage of qualified specialists in many industries.

According to a study by the

German Economic Institute (IW)

from March 2024, women in particular feel the workload that this creates.

According to this, five of the ten professions with the greatest shortage of skilled workers in 2023 will be professions in which the majority of women are employed.

It is similar in social work and social education, where the proportion of women is 77 percent.

There are around 19,000 jobs available here.

In geriatric and nursing care, there are almost 33,000 vacancies that could not be filled.

Women particularly suffer from a shortage of skilled workers: What is the solution?

    For the

    IW

, at least part of the solution could be to make typical women's and men's jobs more attractive to the opposite sex.

So far, however, this has only worked partially.

In health and nursing, for example, a profession that is typically female, the proportion of men has increased from 23.2 to 25.5 percent since 2014.

In social work, the proportion of men even fell: from 25.2 percent in 2014 to 23 percent in 2023. On the other hand, there were increases in the proportion of women in some professions that are typically male.

In the IT industry, the proportion of women has increased from 14.5 percent to 20.4 percent since 2014.

The proportion of female car mechanics has also almost doubled and was almost five percent in 2023.

A lack of workers continues to be a problem for the German economy.

The shortage of skilled workers is becoming increasingly serious, particularly in nursing.

    According to

    Tagesschau.de,

the federal government decided on a skilled workers strategy in October 2022.

The package of measures contains plans for more training and further education opportunities, better work-life balance, flexible transitions to retirement and easier immigration.

Skilled labor shortage in Germany: Female employment offers great potential

    Like Prof. Dr.

    Marcel Fratzscher, President of the

    German Institute for Economics (DIW)

, describes in his column at

    Zeit Online

that women's employment has the greatest potential in the German labor market.

There is a need for a structural strengthening of employment in order to remove the countless hurdles for women in the labor market.

Only around 35 percent of women of working age work full-time.

The consequence of this is lower earnings for women and a large gender pay gap in Germany.
