For three hundred years, perched on a mound in the heart of the Brocéliande forest, it could be admired from afar.
Its roots sheltered, it is said, the ruins of a castle – that of a hero of Arthurian legend – destroyed by the troops of Bertrand du Guesclin in 1372. The Ponthus beech is no more.
Already weakened by the loss of several of its main branches, this tree, among the most famous in Brittany, was uprooted by storm Ciaran on the night of November 1 to 2, 2023. Like the oak of Paulay, in Morbihan or that of Locmaria -Berrien, in Finistère, planted in the parish enclosure…
