Only carry light luggage through Italy: The strict suitcase rule on Trenitalia trains has actually been in effect since March 1st. Will it be enforced soon?

Rome – space problems on the railway.

More precisely: on Frecciarossa high-speed trains.

Provider Trenitalia complains about travelers having too much luggage.

And wants to enforce a strict regulation.

The Frecciarossa trains connect the south and north of Italy, traveling at a maximum speed of 300 km/h to almost all of the country's major cities.

From the southernmost tip of the shoe in Calabria, to northern Milan and possibly soon even to Germany.

Over 240 trips every day.

Suitcase squabble in Italy: provider introduces luggage limit and bicycle rule

Now the subsidiary of the Italian state railways is in a clinch with consumer advocates.

The reason: the suitcase rule, which has actually been in effect since March 1st.

Travelers are only allowed to bring a maximum of two pieces of luggage on board, bicycles, folding bikes and e-scooters only in special transport bags.

Associations reacted outraged.

Because of their protest, Trenitalia has frozen the luggage regulations for the time being - but that doesn't mean they're off the table yet.

On Wednesday (March 6th), the train provider met for separate negotiations with Assoutenti (consumer association), Fiab (environmental and cycling association) and Legambiente (environmental organization).

The goal: an amicable solution to the suitcase dispute.

Bag requirements for bicycles and scooters on trains have been suspended for the time being

And apparently the meetings went well.

“We are very satisfied with this dialogue and the fact that Trenitalia agreed 100 percent to our requests.

Therefore, there is full harmony between the company and the associations, especially in the interest of a safe and comfortable trip for all travelers,” said Assoutenti and Fiab.

The result: Trenitalia will commission a university to analyze the transport risk of bicycles and e-scooters, writes

.

The findings should help to find a suitable solution that is feasible for travelers.

As a temporary solution, passengers can use the luggage compartments in other carriages or between seats in consultation with train attendants.

The upper luggage limit on Italian trains remains: two pieces of luggage per passenger on the Frecciarossa

However, the suitcase upper limit remains.

Each passenger can take two pieces of luggage, plus a bag or backpack and possibly a stroller.

Consumer advocates have ensured that the luggage limit does not differ between first and second class.

A draft also proposes a fine of 50 euros for passengers who do not adhere to the baggage rules.

However, this will be discussed with the mobility and consumer associations before it comes into force.

By the way, a similar rule applies in France.
