Highlights: Three different variants planned: McDonald's is planning a strange new product. It will not be revealed how much the bottles will cost, nor when and for how long the fast food giant will sell them. Already in 2022, a representative of potato farmers in the US state of Idaho sold a French fries scent. The 50-millilitre (1.7-ounce) bottle for $1.89 was available from the Idaho Potato Commission under the title “Frites by Idaho’, especially for Valentine's Day and in a limited edition.

Smell like the chip shop?

McDonald's makes it possible.

In Japan, the fast food giant is presenting a new business idea.

Tokyo – They are yellow, best of all crunchy and somehow they are what divide opinions: French fries.

Some people love them, others find them too unhealthy.

For outdoor pool goers, they are simply a must. Scientists point to the possible psychological consequences of eating fries. The fact is: soon the smell of fresh fries will not only be carried on the body by eating them.

Because in Japan, McDonald's is now coming up with a bizarre idea: a perfume with the scent of French fries.

McDonald's Japan announced this in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday (March 6).

The company shared a photo showing three perfume bottles.

The glass bottles are packed in McDonald's packaging.

Similar to the common advertising images of the perfume industry, a perfume is sprayed onto a woman's neck from a bottle hidden in a red McDonald's fries bag.

McDonald's Japan fries perfume is causing a stir online

As explained, there are three scents.

This includes the smell of the fries as well as the notes of garlic-pepper-mayonnaise and plum-seaweed salt.

It will not be revealed how much the bottles will cost, nor when and for how long the fast food giant will sell them.

The announcement definitely caused a stir on social media.

After less than two days, there were more than 21 million views on Friday afternoon (March 8th).

Users shared the post a whopping 34,000 times and 1,500 users left a comment.

Between the many comments in Asian characters, there are also one or two posts in the Latin writing system and many smileys and hearts.

So many seem to be enthusiastic.

Scientists analyzed the smell of fries and deciphered the secret

That's not surprising.

Many people are only too happy to inhale the smell of the fried fast food classic.

Scientists wanted to find out why this was the case in 2009, according to a report by NTV.

They analyzed the smell of the greasy potato sticks using sophisticated methods and came to the conclusion: The classic fries smell of aromas such as caramel, onion and ironing board.

Depending on the number of frying courses, many notes are imaginable, including flowers, cheese and - of course - potatoes.

Depending on the preparation, the smell also changes, the researchers found.

But chefs generally have many options when it comes to fries.

From the deep fryer to the healthier version in the oven, everyone sees it differently as to how they work best.

Special for Valentine's Day two years ago: US potato farmers sold French fries perfume

By the way, the strange perfume idea is not new.

Already in 2022, a representative of potato farmers in the US state of Idaho sold a French fries scent.

The 50-millilitre (1.7-ounce) bottle for $1.89 was available from the Idaho Potato Commission under the title “Frites by Idaho”, especially for Valentine's Day and in a limited edition.

In keeping with Valentine's Day, the Americans wrote: "Love is in the air... And it smells like French fries." That could soon be the case on one or two dates in Japan.

There, love doesn't just go through the stomach, as the saying goes, but also through the nose.
