A large fire broke out last night on Monte Inici, in the Castellammare del Golfo area in the Trapani area.

Six teams of the Trapani fire brigade and two tankers intervened to put out the flames, fueled by the strong sirocco wind.

The Palermo firefighters also intervened.

Canadair was unable to operate due to strong gusts.

Throughout the night, 36 units with 12 vehicles were involved.

Firefighters teams are also present to protect homes and State Road 187.

Fire, forestry and civil protection teams worked throughout the night to protect houses in the Monte Inici area.

Multiple fire fronts are still active.

The fire was set near the small church of Our Lady of Fatima.

The fire threatened some homes and a hotel.

"The fire front after the Belvedere area affected the Costa Larga-Romita area. Canadair arrived on site but did not intervene due to strong winds. Teams of the forestry fire service, firefighters and civil protection at the I work continuously throughout the night in an attempt to contain the very serious fire which has once again seriously damaged our territory".

This was stated by the mayor of Castellammare del Golfo, in the Trapani area, Giuseppe Fausto.

The fire front started from the Madonna di Fatima area and then touched the Belvedere area, moving to the "Craparello" area from where it split, reaching Pizzo Teleffio, in the upper part of the mountain and the other front in the Costa Larga-Romita area .

"The fire - continues the mayor - has spread more and more due to the strong wind and the impossibility of reaching the places in the evening hours. Monte Inici, the mountain that overlooks Castellammare del Golfo, tragically illuminated by the high flames for the entire night with multiple fronts of fire, partially limited at dawn, which therefore suggest arson fires. It's too soon to take stock of the serious damage but according to a first rough estimate, over 350 hectares of forest and Mediterranean scrub have already been reduced to ash. About 30% of the trees burned in the path of the fire because the undergrowth caught fire, in particular the ampelodesma", he says and thanks "those who have made and are making the areas safe even at the risk of their own safety" .
