The “liberation of speech”: for Marie Derain de Vaucresson, president of the Independent National Authority for Recognition and Reparation (Inirr) of victims of sexual abuse in the Church, this is the main effect of the organization that she has been in charge since its creation, at the end of 2021. At that time, the Sauvé report – which estimated the number of victims in France at 330,000 – finally gave an order of magnitude of the crimes committed.
“As the facts are often prescribed and the attackers are dead, common law did not apply: that is our starting point,” recalls the president, a lawyer specializing in children’s rights.
Its mission, entrusted by the Church: to hear the victims, support them psychologically, investigate the facts, then recognize and financially compensate.
