A visit from the Easter Bunny doesn't just make children's eyes light up.

Its counterpart made from sweet yeast dough is already hopping up here.

Free space for simple plaited bunnies.

When the preparations for Easter are in full swing and the chocolate bunnies and fondant eggs are again lining the supermarket shelves, the yeast dough also has its moment of glory.

He is more in demand at the Christian festival than ever before, and in different forms and variations he contributes to the big Easter brunch or the coffee round on Good Friday.

The plaited bunnies are just as happy about a generous dollop of jam as they are about a vegetarian tomato and mozzarella spread.

The airy Easter bunnies made from yeast dough can easily compete with their chocolate counterparts.

This is how you make the yeast Easter bunnies step by step:

  • Preheat the oven to 180 °C top/bottom heat.

  • Crumble yeast into lukewarm milk and dissolve.

Mix flour, sugar, salt and egg in a mixing bowl.

  • Knead in the dissolved milk and soft butter until a smooth dough forms.

Form into a ball, place in a lightly oiled bowl and let rise covered in a warm place until the dough has doubled in volume.

  • Divide the dough into eight pieces and set aside a small ball of dough from each piece for the Easter bunny's tail.

  • Form the pieces of dough for the bunnies into eight strands about 35 centimeters long, rolling out the ends a little thinner.

  • Shape each strand into a “U” shape and then loop the strands around each other twice at the top.

Place the reserved balls in the bottom free hole.

Cover the Easter bunnies with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

  • Bake the yeast Easter bunnies in a hot oven until golden brown, about 15-20 minutes.

Before serving, dust with powdered sugar if desired and enjoy!

  • Plaited bunnies can be formed from airy yeast dough in just a few simple steps.
