She is the English composer living in Berlin Rebecca Saunders, creator of sound worlds that enhance the listening experience and among the most recognized composers of our time, the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2024 Music Biennale.
The Silver Lion is awarded to Ensemble Modern, the historic German group that for forty years has been traveling the paths of the European and American avant-garde with extraordinary energy and competence, alongside names such as Stockhausen, Reich, Lachenmann, Andriessen, but also Frank Zappa, Ornette Coleman, Anthony Braxton.
The decision was taken by the board of directors of the Venice Biennale on the proposal of Lucia Ronchetti, director of the Music Sector.
The award ceremony of the Golden Lion and that of the Silver Lion will take place on 27 and 29 September respectively in the Sala delle Colonne of Ca' Giustinian, home of the Biennale, during the 68th International Festival of Contemporary Music, from 26 September to October 11th.
The first woman to obtain the Ernst-von-Siemens prize in 2019 and recipient of a focus at the Lucerne Festival and the Berlin Musikfest, Rebecca Saunders is awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement "for the refinement of her research and her compositional intentions, for the attention she dedicates to the sound microcosm, for her ability to create a reserved listening area in the listener, an intimate and interior acoustic space that evolves and amplifies the sound imagery. The composer conceives a specific temporality for each work which becomes an investigation and experimentation on the listening experience. His processing of the sound material is profoundly speculative and at the same time strongly empirical and material, linked to performance and executive strategies".
