The local elections in Sicily will take place on 8 and 9 June, on the same days as voting for the renewal of the European Parliament.
This was decided by the regional council.
There are 37 Municipalities that will renew their elective bodies, 32 due to the natural expiration of the electoral mandate and 5 currently administered by extraordinary commissioners.
As regards the electoral system, 29 will vote with the majority system and 8 with the proportional system.
The voters called to the polls for the Municipal elections are 484,218 in total.
"It is an appropriate and common sense choice which - says the President of the Region, Renato Schifani - we strongly wanted. Election day, in fact, will allow us to significantly contain costs, thus avoiding further burdening the budgets of the Municipalities. Our decision also benefits citizens who will be facilitated in exercising their vote".
"The choice to merge the administrative elections with the European elections - underlines Andrea Messina, regional councilor for local authorities - responds to a dual objective: on the one hand it reduces the inconvenience for the Sicilians called to vote, on the other it limits the expense. choice inspired by the principle of economy and common sense, developed precisely from listening to local administrators on a daily basis".
The only provincial capital affected by this electoral round is Caltanissetta;
among the largest municipalities are Gela, in the Nisseno area, Mazara del Vallo, in the Trapani area, and, for the province of Palermo, Bagheria and Monreale.
Voting operations will take place on Saturday 8th, from 2pm to 10pm, and on Sunday 9th, from 7am to 11pm.
Any run-off for the local elections will be held on Sunday 23rd June from 7am to 11pm. to 11pm and on Monday 24 June from 7am to 3pm.
