Squeeze on intensive farming, mining and battery production.
Final green light from the European Chamber Plenary - with 393 votes in favour, 173 against and 49 abstentions - to the political agreement on the revision of the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED), the main EU instrument for regulating pollution caused by industrial plants, including intensive farming of livestock, responsible for the production of nitrogen oxide, ammonia, mercury, methane and carbon dioxide.
Central part of the revision is the expansion of the facilities covered by the directive, extended for example to large pig farms (greater than 350 units of livestock), poultry (280 units), laying hens (300 units) and 380 units for mixed farms.
The political agreement has for now excluded cattle farming, which had instead been included in the European Commission's proposal and whose inclusion will be "evaluated" at a later date starting from 2026.
