A new recall concerns the sesame paste “Tahin”, which is available in Kaufland branches nationwide.

There is a risk of salmonella.

Kassel – The latest recall of a sesame paste from Kaufland shows that it is not only animal products that can be contaminated by salmonella.

But this is not the only case of salmonella in plant-based products.

Salmonella bacteria were also found in the vegan Rügenwalder Mühlen-Hack, of all things.

There are repeated recall campaigns throughout Germany in which consumers are made aware of dangerous substances or other defects in food.

Recall of DILEK sesame paste at Kaufland – Salmonella detected

According to the consumer portal

lebensmittelwarning.de,

a product from the manufacturer ANATOL GmbH & Co. Wholesales KG is affected by a recall for the whole of Germany.

The reason: Salmonella was detected in the 300 gram jar of DILEK “Tahin” sesame paste.

The affected DILEK product is available in Kaufland branches nationwide.

The recall information on March 7th shows that the manufacturer voluntarily recalled the product.

So far only a single batch has been affected:

Product name

DILEK sesame paste “Tahini” 300g

Best before date

October 16, 2026

Identification of the affected batch

EH23.101623

The letter also states that salmonella was only detected in a single jar of “tahini” sesame paste.

Nevertheless, consumption is not recommended.

However, other production batches of the same product were “perfect and in the usual DILEK quality”.

ANATOL GmbH & Co. Wholesale KG asks all customers to “bring back unopened or already opened products from this batch to the Kaufland markets”.

The purchase price will be refunded.

Salmonella not only in animal products

Salmonella is a genus of bacteria and, according to German infection control, is the cause of a typical food infection.

Salmonella most often enters the gastrointestinal tract of people through food, where the pathogens multiply and cause symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting.

Salmonella is particularly often transmitted through raw meat or meat that has not been sufficiently fried or cooked.

Although much rarer, in addition to animal products, plant-based foods can also contain salmonella.

According to the Lower Saxony State Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (LAVES), transferability of the bacteria from person to person cannot be ruled out either.

But this is rather unlikely and only rarely occurs.

In order to avoid an infection with salmonella, care should be taken not to interrupt the cold chain for longer than necessary after purchasing.

Products that require refrigeration, such as meat and eggs, should only be consumed after they have been sufficiently heated to above 70 degrees.
