What is former Chancellor Angela Merkel actually doing in her well-deserved retirement after 16 strenuous years at the helm of Germany?

It's not quite as tranquil as one might imagine the former politician's pension.

At least not when it comes to the crime novels by best-selling author David Safier, which are currently extremely popular and are among the February bestsellers.

Merkel always has to solve exciting criminal cases.

That doesn't look good: in the second "Miss Merkel" part on RTL, Angela Merkel (Katharina Thalbach) finds a corpse in the cemetery with her dog and starts investigating.

Safier has now published three parts of the “Miss Merkel” series.

In it, the Bremen writer describes in a charming and humorous way how the former Chancellor and her husband Achim repeatedly get involved in criminal cases and try to solve them.

The success did not go unnoticed.

Last year, RTL published the film “Miss Merkel – An Uckermark Crime Story”, Safier's first novel in the series.

The Cologne private broadcaster has now announced that the second volume “Murder in the Cemetery” will also be broadcast on television in 2024 – on March 19th at 8:15 p.m.

Cult actress Katharina Thalbach will once again go on a criminal hunt as Angela Merkel after she and her dog Helmut found a male corpse in the cemetery in the tranquil Klein-Freudenstadt, where the ex-chancellor now lives.

Merkel is supported by her husband Achim (Thorsten Merten) and bodyguard Mike (Tim Kalkhof).

The gardener is not always the murderer, sometimes he is also the corpse.

Pensioner Angela realizes this when her pug discovers the gardener's body in the Klein-Freudenstädter cemetery in the tranquil Uckermark.

The dead man is stuck headfirst in the ground, with only his legs sticking out.

The murder suspects can all be found in two feuding undertaker families.

There is a dubious managing director, a brittle accountant, a sensitive eulogist, a Satanist and a cultivated stonemason.

Not only does Angela share her love of Shakespeare with the latter, the older man also looks like a former French film star.

Will Angela fall for this man's rough charm?

And what does her husband Achim say about that?

The second case of the master detective Miss Merkel also presents the ex-Chancellor with tricky problems in her private life.

Merkel crime fans can certainly hope that “Murder in the Cemetery” will not be the last filmed part.

Because Safier has already provided supplies.

“Miss Merkel: Murder on the High Seas: The New Case of the Ex-Chancellor” was published in December 2023 and immediately jumped to number 1 on the Spiegel bestseller list.

David Nicholls' “Two in One Day” has also made the leap to the big screen and can now be seen on Netflix.
