Unpackaged organic products at dm: Customers can determine the quantity and fill it themselves

According to dm, there is the “possibility of bottling a selection of more than ten popular dmBio products yourself”.

A test run that could set a precedent nationwide: “The offer is a pilot project by dmBio, with which dm is testing an unpackaged system.” In the dm branches that are taking part in this pilot project, customers can limit the amount of organic -Determine the products yourself and fill them into a container you bring with you or a deposit container.

However, a dmbio product was recently affected by a recall.

This deposit container can be rented in dm stores for a fee of 2.75 euros, as explained on the dm website.

Three different container sizes are available.

Purchasing at the filling stations does not differ in price from purchasing a packaged organic product, according to dm.

The managing director of dm, Kerstin Erbe, explained the motivation for the pilot project: “One of our goals at dm is to avoid packaging.

The easiest way to save packaging is to offer our products unpackaged.”

EU figures show worrying developments – packaging waste is particularly problematic in Germany

The European Union first collected data on packaging waste per EU citizen in 2005.

According to the EU statistics agency Eurostat, the amount of packaging waste per capita in Germany increased by 26 percent by 2021, as the data shows.

Across the EU as a whole, the increase was an average of 19 percent over the same period.

Not only packaging waste from private households was recorded, but also all packaging waste that occurs within a country.

Packaging waste is a serious problem worldwide.

According to data published by

Eurostat

in October 2023 , around 237 kilograms of packaging waste was produced per capita in Germany in 2021.

This puts Germany well above the EU average.

This is considerably lower at just under 189 kilograms per capita.

Meanwhile, a traditional dm branch recently had to close.

Apparently that didn't go down well with the local residents.
