On the amendment for the elimination of the ballot for mayors proposed by the League, the government - according to parliamentary sources - should invite the Northern League senators to withdraw and Salvini's party should transform the amendment into an agenda for the elections decree.

According to what we learn, the government will refer to the Senate on the amendment to the elections bill presented by the League on the third term.

The executive took the same line in the commission a few weeks ago.

There are around forty amendments presented to the elections decree in the Senate.

Mostly these are proposals for changes from the opposition but there are also some from the majority: 3 from FdI, two from the League and one from FI.

The League, as announced yesterday, has re-proposed the one on the third mandate for the presidents of the Regions as it had already done in the constitutional affairs commission.

The other amendment concerns the possibility for mayors to be elected in the first round if they exceed 40% of the votes, therefore a stop to the run-offs.

The proposal, which refers to the consolidated law on local authorities, concerns municipalities with a population exceeding 15 thousand inhabitants.

According to the amendment "the candidate who has obtained the highest number of valid votes is proclaimed elected mayor. In the event of a tie in votes, the candidate linked to the list or group of lists for the election of the council is proclaimed elected mayor municipality which achieved the highest overall electoral figure. In the event of an equal electoral figure, the oldest candidate in age is proclaimed mayor".

"The League must stop, the blitz on the cancellation of the run-offs three months before the vote is a disgrace to the most basic democratic rules" This was stated by the secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein.

"In the majority they are in rags. The protagonists are always the exponents of the League who, after having presented the Save Zaia amendment which cancels the limit of mandates for regional presidents, now proposes, with amendment 4.105, the de facto abolition of the run-off in the municipalities. Obviously for us this amendment is an aberration, a provocation, an unacceptable coup against laws that have proven to work well. It is intolerable that the League, to settle internal accounts within the majority, plays on the rules of our democracy. The Elections Decree which was only supposed to establish the date of the vote has become a coup which we will oppose. What do Giorgia Meloni's party and FI think of it"?

Thus the president of the senators of the Democratic Party Francesco Boccia.
